    Great video! I always separate the inner from the outer, just to keep the inner dry. And also because it’s so hard to pitch in high wind when the inner is attached, it’s unwieldy. But when separated, the outer sets up easy even in a blizzard.

    I've also moved away from gas now and primarily use alcohol stoves for all my trips, just overall more enjoyable to me. Been looking for a lightweight pot stand for my speedster stove and I'd seen that esbit toaks stand. Do you think if I cut the lip off the rectangle where you put the tablets to make it a bit lower you could put the speedster on top and use it as an alcohol stove stand? Or would the pot be too close to the burner for it to work properly? Thanks.

    Of course they work! They're absolutely amazing poles and I really like them for all my trekking pole tents. I just got Dan's Iceline poles as well; while they're a bit heavier, they're also trekking poles so you're going to save weight OR add trekking poles to your kit if you want them. To your point though, the Z-Flicks poles are just outstanding bit of gear. The Iclines will be more robust than these even, and these poles are typically much more robust than their competition.

    Got my Xmid this week and spent today trying all the different pitches and setups. I've added a couple of guylines to the bag for those side tie-outs if they touch too much, but as it was I had a good couple of inches clearance so I'll see how it goes in practice. I love the awning pitch though. And the inner is massive, you could easily sleep two adults in there. Also added a few extra pegs, I reckon 10-12 total if it was really windy plus it's good to have a few different kinds (needles, Y profile, etc) to suit the ground.

    • @escapeoutdoors.
      @escapeoutdoors. 22 дня назад

      @@alangauld6079 so what’s your overall feeling on it. I had mine out today try staking the two extra guy lines on each side together. This is what I did. Still a cool tent for them long distance trails.

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 22 дня назад

      @@escapeoutdoors. My initial reaction was just that it's huge! I normally buy a 2 man because I like some space to spread out but, having seen this, I think I should have got the Xmid1 because it would have been enough. And finding space to pitch it might be difficult - certainly, on my last trip to the Cairngorms, I struggled to find room for my old Vango, I'm not sure how I'd have got the Durston down! But I love the different pitch options and the double vestibules and it's half the weight of my Vango. I'm using Durston's poles rather than trekking poles because I'll tend to use it as a base-camp and need the trekkers during the day. I'm really impressed with the poles, so light and pack really small. My next camping trip will be to Knoydart in late August, I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes in the wild. but I'm also aiming to do the WHW in the winter so will be using it with trekking poles for that.

    I feel Vern 1 and 2 have taken a lot of design from the Kuiu Storm Star, yet in no way can compete with it. The Kuiu Storm Star can withstand winds 60 plus miles per hour (watched the wind test on all sides). The Kuiu Storm Star 2p is still king, rock solid bomb shelter, and very little interior flapping. Now this is a 4 Season tent that has always eaten the Hilleberg Soulo BL hands down!

    • @escapeoutdoors.
      @escapeoutdoors. 21 день назад

      Sorry I didn’t see this I agree it seems like every tent maker takes a little from others & I have had my eye on the Kuiu for a long time. Cheers for the first comment much appreciated grew up with Hitchcock As for memories this is why I video as my Nan had Alzheimer’s so yeah it gives the kids something to look back on that I may remember too. Now let’s talk sierra designs I think Aaron likes it but I shouldn’t talk for him in my opinion it seems a lot better than the Durston Xmid 1. The gap between the outer & inner fly seems a lot larger. So when I got the Durston I tried it out with no mods just the guy lines they give you. Hence problems. On a previous vid the rain & condensation stuck both the outer & inner together the way to combat that was to lower the inner but in stronger winds it wouldn’t be the best. And I don’t want to give a false impression on the tent.

      That’s the first time I’ve used the Sierra Designs in anger and I was impressed. Loads of room, I’m 6ft 2” and had plenty of head room too. It dealt with the wind and rain with ease and the fly and inner have a huge gap so no worries about condensation ruining things. You also have decent enough room in the porch to cook whilst sheltered from the elements. It’s my go to one man tent now year round.

    Another nice video, thanks for the mention. +1 on what your man below says. I would attach all additional guidelines and pegging points with 3 mm shock cord loops @2" dia (coupla quid from Go Outdoors-climbing section or an old daysack?) larks - headed on so you can move your guys as you need them just something to take out that extra loading when the fly goes slack and then suddenly snaps taut under a sudden gust. Two extra guys does the job for me as they are enough for up to alpine elevations I reckon and they double up as lines to elevate your door into 'porch mode'. The man Dan himself has reported that people have confirmed 50mph wind survival on these tents! - I have experienced up to 30. After that I consider relocating to somewhere less windy as I value my sleep. Recent upgrade I've just made is to add a piece of 1.524m x 1m tyvek 1443r footprint from Spenic for just over a tenner weighing in at 133g!!! I always remove my inner so that during the day I can have lunch during the day underneath it as a tarp without worrying about getting my sleeping accommodation wet, I then put up the fly, put down the ground sheet and then put the inner in. With regards to how good the tent is, it's like everything, it depends on your intended use. If you are going mountaineering in it, I would not recommend it. If you are doing long distance thru-hiking in it, I would recommend the one person over the two person due to more chances of finding a suitable pitch because of the decreased footprint. For four season/high winds then in my personal opinion I reckon the hilleberg enan for a couple of hundred quid more is the way to go. In other news, my Cleveland Way part 1 is out if you fancy a brief look at my channel if you have a spare half an hour? Taking forever to do the editing though. I still have another couple of episodes to do as well. Cheers, Matt.

Light to carry and the vestibules are great for handling kit and cooking. Previously had a couple of lightweight tents but, at 70, headroom is an issue. Each to their own. Nice vid again, I pack mine (if you're interested) in a yellow exped sil nylon dry bag (1litre -small) lto squash all the air out with the inner always removed and stashed separately in the og bag. So both in the dry bag with the inner seperated from the outer rain fly - can achieve the 1 person down to a milk bottle size and the 2 person about 1 and a half. About your performance issues you are experiencing (mid-life sag, of the inner🤣) I really think it's your pitch as I don't remember having this problem, got to get that rectangle tight (with plenty of slack on the adjusters for max venting or tight down for weather that is turkish-delight), then give it the beans with the poles? Hope to have my Cleveland Way videos out in the next coupla weeks if you fancy leaving this aging Loggy some abuse in the comments??? If you're ever up Teesside I have plenty of spare Lawson iron wire that you can have.

      I have both the X-Mid 1 and 2 Solid, I took the two-person on the Coast to Coast last year, the problem I had was the larger footprint in finding wild camping spots. Once it was up though it's a large amount of room to organise yourself and kit. The ability to roll the fly completely up cylindrically from one corner to the other, making a starlight tent for those hot nights and the ability to be able to quickly unroll to cover up if the weather changes is superb. For maximum upgrade points, I recommend a tiny carabiner and 6" of cord on the grab handle of your Bergen tied round the mud basket on your pole to suspend your Bergen off the ground and maximise air flow, thus reducing condensation through the tent. I like to get my X Mids taut before I use the ridge guylines. Using the guylines to tighten your tent is in my opinion wrong as it should be tensioned through all four corners and poles to be bass drum tight before you pull out on the guylines Which I only use once it gets over 25 mph gusts. For Guylines I have replaced with Lawson Ironwire as the originals are reflective and I carry two additional with a tactical toggle from henge hammocks for quick threading and tensioning. I have added Six 6" 3mm bungee loops larks-headed too the four base loops for pegs and two to the mid panel tie outs for inclement weather☁️☁️☁️ The toggles help with going to porch-mode (door with guyline to peg to make a larger admin area) for easier cooking as I have had a clumsy moment when I poured a pot of boiling water on my genitalia and dried it by firing a lit gas burner at my crutch simultaneously!

    I've got the X mid 2 solid, it's a great tent, it'll be accompanying myself and my daughter on the Pennine way at the end of the month. I see they've updated the pegs and the colour of the groundsheet again. A couple of tips....when you peg out the 4 corners, tighten the adjusters before you insert the poles, it'll be taughter and sit better, also, I added 4 more guys at the additional guy points, if you have the guy on the door edge straight out at a 90° angle to the side of the tent, and the end guy on the end panel also straight out at 90° from the end of the tent, it pulls the fly away from the inner considerably. Basically the 2 guys should be pulling that panel between them in opposing directions. I've got a video I've just posted on my channel highlighting my new pegs, but you can see how I used the guy lines. I hope this helps 👍🏻

Your series is by far the best in terms of showing what I can expect. Too many people make it about them rather than the journey itself, of course we want to know a bit about you but it's nice to see where you're actually going and you nailed it. Making a new lifelong friend on the way is awesome in itself and just added to the quality of the story. I suspected you are also an ex-squaddie and the grass/twig showing the map route just confirmed it, that was a nice a touch as well. I think you have inspired me to film my own journey now so thanks to both of you for that. I hope mine is as enjoyable as yours clearly was.
